Families living near Doce Fire zone pack, wait

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

From a distance, an ominous cloud of smoke billowed from the mountain tops north of Prescott from the Doce Wildfire. Ava Kleinman saw the fire up close and personal.

The 7-year-old has kept a close eye on Doce's path from her front yard. Wednesday afternoon she watched as it left its mark on Granite Mountain.

While the kids played, their mom packed, making sure the family is ready if they need to evacuate.

"Things that I thought that I couldn't live without really don't seem that important when you're planning to leave in an emergency situation," said Rebekah Kleinman.

Planes fly over their home as crews work to slow the fast moving flames. As of Tuesday night, the fire hadn't yet cleared the ridge in front of the Kleinman's home, but by Wednesday morning the inferno had made its way into the Valley below.

"One of the huge tankers flew right overhead last night. It was so close one of my kids swore they could see the pilot," said Kleinman.

Although the Kleinmans are prepared for the worst, they remain cautiously optimistic.

"Honestly, today I feel a lot better than I did last night. We've seen the fire shift quite a bit. But it's still kind of nerve wrecking to pack all of your things and just not knowing," said Kleinman.
