Police: Homeowner opens fire on would-be robbers

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A homeowner caught two armed men trying to break into his house off-guard when he pointed his own gun back at them, according to police. It happened Friday night at a home on Southern Highlands near Valley View.

Police say one of the men knocked on the elderly man's front door earlier Friday afternoon pretending to have the wrong address. The suspect returned later with another man and a gun.

The men tried pushing their way into the home, police say, but the homeowner pulled out his own gun and shot at the suspects.

Both suspects fled on foot, but police found one of them with a gunshot wound to his cheek later Friday night.

Police say the other suspect is still at large. A description of the male suspect was not provided.

Retired Metro Lt. Randy Sutton calls the homeowner a hero in this incident for defending himself and his home. He says even if the suspects weren't armed, the homeowner had the right to protect himself according to Nevada law.

"If you can legitimately say that I was in fear for my life or severe body injury or death, you have a right to defend yourself and the right to defend your family," said Sutton.
