A man whose body was found on the side of a road in northeast Las Vegas earlier this year may have been beaten to death over a debt.

A warrant declaration released Friday detailed the events leading up to the arrest of Jonathan Anthony Reyes in connection to the April death of Abraham Mathews, 38.

According to authorities, Reyes was charged with murder with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit murder, first-degree kidnapping, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, robbery with a deadly weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery.

Clark County Courts also said a warrant was issued for the arrest of Eric Orduna in the case.

According to the declaration, Mathews' body was found April 10 in the 1600 block of Sandy Lane, near the intersection of Pecos Road and Owens Avenue. In describing the discovery, police, in the report, said his wrists and ankles were handcuffed, his neck was wrapped in a bandana, an article of clothing and a towel rack ring.

The Clark County Coroner's office said Mathews died of blunt force trauma to the head as a result of a homicide.

Shortly after Mathews' slaying, police were able to recover a vehicle registered to him as well as locate the person who was last driving the vehicle.

That person, according to the report, told police that she and Mathews met when they were using meth some time before his death. Mathews, as told by the witness in the report, had his vehicle taken away from him by two other drug users.

The witness, in the report, sought help from Orduna to retrieve the vehicle. Mathews, as described in the report by the witness, was directed to stay with Reyes at Orduna's home while they sorted out the retrieval.

The witness relayed to police in the report that Mathews talked about having money in his possession.

After the retrieval was made, the witness told police, in the report, Orduna and Reyes attacked Mathews, trying to force him to give them his money. The witness and another woman saw the attack, police learned in the report.

The witness told police, in the report, the two suspects tied Mathews up with zip ties and beat him with bricks and a broomstick while feeding him food and more meth. The beating resulted in Mathews becoming unresponsive, the report showed.

The suspects subsequently wrapped Mathews in a sheet and drove out to a roadside to dump his body, the witness told detectives in the report.

The other witness in the report told police Orduna admitted to killing Mathews and dumping his body. The witness, in the report, stated Orduna committed the act because Mathews owed him money.

A search of Clark County Detention Center records listed the 20-year-old Reyes' arrest on June 13.

Authorities said Orduna remains at large in connection to the slaying.
