LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Despite not charging a resort fee that has become the standard of Las Vegas Strip properties, one downtown hotel said it will charge guests a $5 fee to support the Fremont Street Experience.

According to a spokesperson with the Golden Nugget hotel-casino, the fee will be charged per night's stay beginning July 1.

Despite the fee, the Golden Nugget contends the $5 charge is 80 percent less than those of competitors on the Las Vegas Strip.

News of the fee confirmed an article first posted Tuesday on website VegasChatter.com, which revealed 10 downtown properties help fund the operation of the Fremont Street Experience and its entertainment offerings.

The Golden Nugget says the charge will fund in part the nightly light shows, bars, retail, vendors and security at the five-block district.

The Nugget's Vice President of Marketing Amy Chasey tells FOX5 the company pays about $1 million in yearly dues to Fremont Street.

The hotel maintains it is keeping room rates from rising to stay competitive with other properties, and instead opting to charge what it calls a "nominal" fee amid rising costs.

Chasey said room rates hover around $45/night.

Tourists staying downtown had a mixed bag of opinions, some were OK with the fee because they enjoy what Fremont Street has to offer.

Others were concerned this could be the start of a slippery slope.

"If they're the first to do it, the rest will follow in my experience," said a woman staying at Golden Nugget.

The charge will not affect those who booked a room before June 1 for a stay past July 1, according to the hotel.

As of this writing, none of the other nine reported Fremont Street Experience underwriters have mentioned a fee or confirmed instituting one.
