WINNEMUCCA, NV (FOX5) -

A Chicago man was killed in a 27-car pileup caused by a dust storm in northern Nevada on Monday afternoon, according to officials.

Trooper Jim Stewart, of the Nevada Highway Patrol, said the crash happened on either side of Interstate 80 in Winnemucca about 4:45 p.m.

Stewart said visibility was reduced to zero during the large dust storm.

Ravi Dyer, 51, who was killed in the crash, was driving a truck westbound on the interstate when his vehicle hit the back of another truck, according to Stewart. He said Dyer's truck was then hit from behind by two other vehicles. He said that by the time the chain-reaction crash was over, 27 vehicles were involved.

Stewart said 36 people were taken to area hospitals to be treated for injuries - three of them serious.

The details of the pileup are still under investigation, Stewart said.
