LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A military father came home to Las Vegas after spending a year overseas, and surprised his children with an early return.

Major Scott Powell spent almost a year in Afghanistan flying planes in the United States Air Force. Last week he learned he could come home two weeks early.

Powell's wife, Angela, and oldest daughter, Jayde, met him at the airport after the 36-hour flight. Then, the three headed to Henry Bozarth Elementary School to surprise Powell's youngest children.

"Normally I was supposed to come home in two weeks. They were going to meet me at the airport. I feel fortunate that I got to come home a couple weeks early while they're still at school," said Major Powell.

Third-grader, Taylor, raised his hand when the school principal asked the class who has parents that are currently deployed. Seconds later, his father entered the classroom and surprised his son.

Fifth-grader Jordan didn't see the surprise coming either. When her father surprised her, she burst into tears saying "He's been an awesome father to me, and I just love him so much."

This return home is Major Powell's last. After serving 20 years in the Air Force, he officially retires in June. He says being away from his family is tougher than the challenges he faces overseas.

"When you're flying down range, it's just part of the job, but when you're away from your family and missing things, that's definitely the hard part," he said.

Now that the hard part is over, the Powells are looking forward to being a complete family once again.
