Parents receive letter warning of 'strangers' near school

Posted: Updated:

Parents of Aldeane Ries Elementary School students received a letter given to their students warning them about strangers in the area of the southwest Valley school.

The letter doesn't cite any specific incidents but does say the school has been contacted by parents worried about strangers.

FOX5 was notified by Clark County School District police the matter is being investigated by Metro, but could not confirm any specific happenings.

"I was glad the letter was sent home and they were making us aware of the situation," said parent Stephanie Owens, who has two children that attend Ries Elementary.

"You have to be alert 24/7 when your kids are at school now," said Jackie Mariani, who also has two children enrolled at Ries.

CCSD police, along with Metro, showed an increased presence at the school Thursday.

"There's not enough of them," said parent Bret Vasquez. "There's a lot of kids and not enough security."

The open desert surrounding the school is cause for even more concern for Vasquez, "Thank God (my kids) don't have to walk home," she said. "But a lot of kids do, and it leaves them open to strangers coming up to them."

All parents who spoke to FOX5 said the vague letter was more than enough to remind their sons and daughters about the rules they need to know if a stranger approaches.
