Mohave board bars employees from lying to board

Posted: Updated:

The Mohave County Board of Supervisors is making it a crime for a county employee to knowingly lie to the board about an agenda item during an official meeting of the board.

Supervisor Steven Moss said his proposal is intended to ensure that the board gets good information. It was approved on a 3-2 vote Monday.

Supervisor Joy Brotherton opposed Moss' proposal, saying any crime for lying to the board should also apply to elected officials who lie.

Moss says he didn't want his proposal to run afoul of a legal shield for elected officials.

A violation would be a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $2,500.

Deputy County Attorney Bill Eckstrom said the measure might be difficult to enforce.
