LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Clark County School District entered Tuesday night undecided on how to go about finding its next superintendent. The district, instead, entered Wednesday firm on who will lead CCSD.

The CCSD Board of Trustees elected to remove the interim tag from Pat Skorkowsky's title and named him as permanent superintendent of the fifth-largest school district in the country.

"You don't start out in a small town in Oklahoma, thinking that these things will happen," Skorkowsky told media after the board approved his hiring. "But I think that's the message that needs to go out to every student: That you never know where you'll end up if you work hard, you do your job and you make sure you do your job every step of the way."

Skorkowsky has spent 25 years as an educator and administrator with CCSD.

His appointment comes after some decision making for CCSD on how the district would replace former schools chief Dwight Jones, who stepped down from the job on March 22. Skorkowsky, who recently served as the deputy superintendent, was named in the interim role in Jones' departure.

The board was slated Tuesday to vote on whether to hire search firm McPherson & Jacobson to locate candidates nationally. A 6-1 vote squashed those plans, and, instead, the board went forward with interviewing Skorkowsky, who informed trustees he was ready to answer questions anytime on the job.

"We are making a very big mistake if we delay this and delay this and delay this, because it does jeopardize that momentum that we have the possibility of taking off with," Trustee Chris Garvey said in deciding to interview Skorkowsky.

At the end of the interview process that went into the late night hours, the board was convinced they found their man.

"I cannot imagine any candidate from anywhere in the nation who could have talked with the breadth and depth that he did," Trustee Patrice Tew said.

The next phase of the hiring process is negotiations with Skorkowsky over salary.

The school board has indicated it will officially offer Skorkowsky $250,000 a year with a $20,000 per year bonus if he fulfills a four-year contract. CCSD officials said they hope to have a final contract approved "swiftly."
