Family, friends and classmates were distraught and angry at a candlelight vigil on Friday night for a 15-year-old who was killed over his iPad.

Marcos Arenas died Thursday night when two male suspects who remain on the run tried to steal his tablet before running him over.

Marcos was a freshman at Bonanza High School. Dozens gathered there Friday to remember him.

Those gathered said they're having a hard time saying goodbye to a teen who died over a birthday gift from his father.

Marcos' father, Ivan Arenas, could barely hold back his tears.

"Never in my life would I imagine that buying my kid an iPad for his birthday would end up getting him run over," he said.

Marcos was walking near Charleston Boulevard and Torrey Pines Drive when someone jumped out of a car and tried to take his iPad from him. Marcos wouldn't let go, and the suspects sped off, hitting him, according to police.

"I'm upset these guys took his life away and didn't care. He didn't have a chance to go home," said Orville Fassett, Marcos' best friend.

Marcos' father said his iPad was something he cherished, and he's not surprised he fought for it.

"He never had a lot. The little bit we could gather around, he appreciated a lot. That's one of the big reasons he fought for that device," he said.

The family has set up an account to help with funeral expenses at Wells Fargo banks. It's called the Marcos V. Arenas Memorial Fund under the account number 1255025601.

The Garside choir will dedicate an upcoming choir concert to Marcos.

Police said the suspect vehicle is a white Ford Explorer or Expedition. The car has no license plates. It is equipped with factory running boards and has tinted windows.

Anyone with information about this crime is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555.
