The explosion and fire happened about 11:15 a.m. at Nevada Truck and Trailer Repair at 4915 N. Sloan Lane near North Las Vegas Boulevard.

A spokesman for the Clark County Fire Department told FOX5 that crews were working on a tanker at the business when something went wrong. They said a body was found inside the garage where the crews were working.

Firefighters said the blaze that followed the blast was extinguished.

Pictures of the scene showed sections of wall and roof missing where the blast happened.

Officials said no other injuries were reported.

Jayson Javitz, general counsel for Nevada Truck and Trailer Repair, said one of his company's best welders was the man killed in the blast.

"This wasn't some brand-new trainee. I mean this was a very experienced, very skilled, certified welder," Javitz told FOX5, speaking by phone from California.

Javitz said that shop often deals with repairing tanker trucks which contain hazardous materials.

But he said it's still not known what was in the tanker that exploded.

"The initial presumption is that somehow there was either product or vapor that for some reason wasn't drained out as he was welding on it and that caused the explosion," Javitz said.

Clark County Fire and OSHA investigators are still looking to see if that was the cause.

Meanwhile, Javitz said everyone that knew the victim is surprised this type of accident could happen to him.

"He's probably done those type of jobs countless times in his career," Javitz told FOX5.

Las Vegas Metro police said Sloan Lane was closed north of Las Vegas Boulevard. The boulevard was briefly closed after the fire, but has since reopened.

The identity of the person who was killed was not immediately released.
