The city of Henderson on Thursday gave FOX5 two pictures of Onion, the 120-pound Mastiff/Rhodesian that killed a little boy in April of last year. Onion has lived at a Henderson animal control facility since a Colorado-based animal rights group managed to appeal a court decision to have the dog put down.

Gina Greisen with Nevada Voters for Animals had been alleging that the city is not treating Onion humanely. She maintained her stand even after seeing pictures of his cage.

"He's been locked in that cage. He's not been allowed out of that cage for the past year," she said.

In a statement released on Thursday, Bud Cranor with the city of Henderson said, "The dog is being cared for by staff and regularly sees a veterinarian. The veterinarian has said the dog is in good health and has space that is adequate for the animal."

Greisen said the pictures don't tell the whole story.

"People who believe he should live and people who believe he should die agree that how he is being kept by the city of Henderson is cruel and inhumane," she said.

Nevada Voters for Animals has put together an online petition to encourage Henderson leaders to treat Onion humanely while he is locked up.

On July 3, the Nevada Supreme Court will hear the case on whether Onion should be put down or released to the Lexus Project, the Colorado-based organization that defends dogs that are to be euthanized.

Greisen wants Onion to be taken out of his cage and walked occasionally. Cranor would not say whether that is happening. He did add in his statement that, "The dog was declared vicious after it killed the baby boy."
