LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A man suspected of shooting his roommate was shot by officers after he pulled out what appeared to be a gun during a confrontation, Las Vegas Metro police said Thursday.

According to police, the confrontation happened about 1:30 a.m. in the area of Charleston Boulevard and Bruce Street.

Officers were called to the area by a resident who claimed to have been shot the evening before by a roommate, police said.

According to Metro Capt. Chris Jones, police confronted a man identified as Miguel Martinez, 29, who matched the description in the apparent shooting that happened Wednesday night.

During the incident, an officer fired on the suspect, who police say went by the nickname "Psycho,"when it appeared he pulled a semi-automatic handgun from his waistband.

"Preliminary investigation indicates that the firearm the individual produced was a real looking pellet gun," Jones said.

Police said the suspect pulled a replica of a Colt .45 caliber handgun. Police noted the replica is designed to look and feel exactly as the original weapon.

Martinez was taken to University Medical Center in critical condition.

The officer who opened fire in the incident was placed on routine paid-administrative leave, Metro said.
