A 20-year-old Las Vegas man has been charged in the slaying of a 17-year-old girl who died after a shooting at a house party more than a year ago.

On Wednesday, a Las Vegas Metro police spokesman said Demetrius Black has been charged in the Jan. 15, 2012 death of Betty Pinkney.

According to a search of the Clark County Detention Center inmate database, Black was arrested on March 7 on unrelated robbery charges.

According to police, the shooting originally happened when arguing began at a home in the 4200 block of Tattersal Place, near Lamb Road and Alexander Boulevard.

There were multiple gunshots amid the altercation that resulted in two girls being struck by bullets, police said. In an arrest report, police said at least a dozen shots were fired at the home.

Pinkney, who was a student at Desert Pines High School, and the other victim, Karen Sinatra, were taken to a local hospital. Pinkney was later pronounced dead.

Metro noted about 80 people were at the party.

In an arrest report, detectives connected Black to the shooting through shell casings and a weapon believed to have been involved. The weapon believed to be the one that killed Pinkney was reported stolen by a Clark County Court Marshal, according to the arrest report.

The marshal's son, in the report, told police he took the weapon to use for protection but had it robbed from him by two known gang members, one of them was identified as Black.

Black, in the report, denied being at the party during the gunfire, but detectives were able to put his cell phone in the area of the scene through phone records.

Police, in the report, were able to get a statement from Black's girlfriend who was with him at the party. She told detectives, in the report, Black fired at the house after they were confronted by other people at the party.

Black, during a jail house interview with detectives this week, again denied his involvement with the shooting, but detectives, in the report, asserted there was enough evidence to charge him.

According to court documents, Black was also charged with attempted murder with a deadly weapon and 12 counts of discharging a gun into an occupied structure.
