MOAPA, NV (FOX5) -

A preliminary hearing is scheduled Wednesday for an 18-year-old charged in an impaired driving crash that killed five people on Interstate 15 outside of Las Vegas earlier this year.

Jean Ervin Soriano, 18, is due to appear before a judge in Moapa Township Justice Court at 1:30 p.m.

Soriano was charged with five counts of driving under the influence causing death, two counts of DUI causing bodily harm, driving without a license and failure to reduce speed in a crash on March 30.

Soriano, who authorities in California said was also a fugitive from a juvenile detention facility, is also being held in Clark County Detention Center in lieu of $3.5 million bail.

According to authorities, Soriano was behind the wheel of a Dodge Durango that struck a Chevy AstroVan in the southbound lanes of Interstate 15 at Mile Marker 101 near Mesquite.

The Nevada Highway Patrol said the collision caused the van carrying seven people to roll over off the freeway. Five people in the van died as a result of the wreck.

According to the Clark County Coroner's office, the people who died were identified as Genaro Fernandez, 31, of Norwalk, CA; Raudel Fernandez-Avila, 49, and Belen Fernandez, 53, both of Lynwood, CA; and Angela Sandoval, 13, and Leonardo Fernandez-Avila, 45, both of Los Angeles.

The NHP said a driver and a teen passenger were transported to University Medical Center with critical injuries.

Meanwhile, Soriano and another passenger in the Durango were treated and released from UMC.

While at UMC, according to an NHP arrest report, Soriano was questioned by troopers about the wreck.

Soriano told investigators in the report he was heading to Las Vegas from St. George, UT.

In the report, the NHP claims Soriano had a strong odor of alcohol emitting from his breath and his person. The report also states he had watery and bloodshot eyes at the time.

When asked by investigators if he had consumed any alcohol, Soriano, in the report, said he had some Budweiser. When he was asked how many, Soriano, as stated in the report, said "too many."

He was arrested immediately following his release from the hospital, the report said.
