LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Wind and lack of hydrants in a northwest Las Vegas neighborhood aided in the spread of flames on a home, a fire official said Wednesday.

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue reported a blaze on Tomsik Street, near W. Alexander and N. Cimarron roads, at about 1:15 a.m.

Tim Szymanski of LVFR said crews were told by the family that the fire started in a shed at the rear of the property. He said a person inside the home was awaken by a car horn in the neighborhood when he saw the flames.

"[He] went out there with a garden hose, and tried to knock it down," Szymanski said. "But he says the wind was making it more intense."

Szymanski said the flames spread to the attic of the home.

Two adults and four children were able to escape the home uninjured before its roof collapsed, according to LVFR. Szymanski noted the inside was destroyed by the fire.

"This is an older part of the county," Szymanski said. "There's limited water and that means there's limited fire hydrants in the area."

The American Red Cross was assigned to assist the family with fire relief. An investigation into the fire is ongoing.
