LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan on Monday announced the 49th class of U.S. Presidential Scholars, and it includes three Las Vegas Valley students.

The list is comprised of 141 high school seniors from across the nation, recognized for accomplishments in academics and the arts.

The three local seniors are:

  • Caolinn Mejza, of Henderson - Mejza attends Las Vegas Academy of International Studies, Performing and Visual Arts.
  • Sharon Fang, of Las Vegas - Fang attends Clark High School.
  • Justin Joseph, of Las Vegas - Joseph attends Valley High School.

"Presidential Scholars demonstrate the accomplishments that can be made when students challenge themselves, set the highest standards, and commit themselves to excellence," Duncan said. "I'm honored to celebrate their creativity, hard work, and community service, and I encourage them - and all students - to continue to showcase the capacity for greatness in our nation's young people."

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was created in 1964 and has honored more than 6,000 students. This year's awards ceremony will take place on June 16 in Washington, DC. Each student will receive a medallion.
