NORTH LAS VEGAS, NV (FOX5) -

North Las Vegas police said alcohol and vehicle speed appeared to be factors in a wreck that killed a man and critically injured a woman Thursday.

NLV police reported the single-vehicle accident at 4:26 a.m. on Camino Eldorado north of Tropical Parkway.

According to police investigators, a 22-year-old woman was driving northbound on Camino Eldorado at a high rate of speed when she lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree, severing the vehicle in two.

Police said she and a 23-year-old male passenger, identified as James Monterio, were ejected from the vehicle.

Monterio was pronounced dead at the scene while the woman was transported to University Medical Center Trauma in critical condition.

Police said the incident marked the fifth traffic-related fatality of this year in North Las Vegas.
