Man piloting his new plane crashes in front of horrified wife

DOUGLAS COUNTY, KS (KCTV) -

The pilot of a small, private plane suffered critical injuries after he crashed shortly after takeoff.

Authorities said the man's horrified wife saw the crash. She called 911 at 12:41 p.m. Wednesday.

Dennis McNish, who is in his 60s, was rushed to the hospital. He is expected to survive.

Authorities said McNish had just taken off from his property when he lost altitude and crashed onto a fence on his property.

McNish's granddaughter, Rebecka Chamberlain, said her grandfather had flown regularly years ago. He purchased the plane about two months ago and had been fine-tuning it when the crash occurred.

She said she is trying to stay strong and hoping her grandfather recovers.

"I keep praying that everything goes good," the worried Lawrence High School senior said.

The ultralight aircraft crashed in a field off 1300 Road near 1643 East, just south of the Douglas County Jail.

Douglas County sheriff's deputies are on the scene now. Federal investigators will also investigate.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the injured man was transported by helicopter to a Kansas City-area hospital.

Chamberlain said her grandfather had stopped flying because his previous plane was too old. She said he recently bought the fixed-wing aircraft.
