LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Fire officials estimated the damage caused by a blaze at a Las Vegas medical building Wednesday morning at $1 million.

The fire happened at 8:10 a.m. at Southern Nevada Medical Center at 3025 S. Maryland Pkwy., near Sunrise Hospital.

According to Stacey Welling, spokeswoman for the Clark County Fire Department, 911 calls reported smoke and flames shooting from the roof of the building. She said employees smelled smoke and evacuated the building before firefighters arrived.

Clark County Deputy Fire Chief Erik Newman said it took about 50 firefighters about 45 minutes to extinguish the blaze. He says it was difficult at first to reach the fire, which caused the roof of the building to collapse.

"Pulling away ceiling, pulling away dry wall, sheet rock, getting in those tight, concealed spaces to get water on the fire," were just some of the challenges, Newman said. He says it's fortunate the fire broke out early in the day, before most patients arrived.

"We didn't save anything from the second floor because the roof collapsed down," said Sunrise Pediatrics employee Mina Manigbas. She says billing and medical records were not lost in the fire.

Welling said the building houses Southern Nevada Medical Group, West Coast Imaging, Quest Diagnostics and Southern Pediatrics. A representative of Quest Diagnostic said all appointments at the burned building are being redirected to the lab at the intersection of Burnham Avenue and East Flamingo Road. Appointments at Sunrise Pediatrics are being sent to the location at 7875 S. Rainbow Blvd., according to a spokesperson for the practice.

Newman said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

There were no injuries in the blaze.
