Firings announced in NV patient dumping case

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval said disciplinary action, including termination, is being taken against workers at a state-owned Las Vegas psychiatric hospital in an out-of-state patient dumping case that stretched over five years.

In a statement released Monday, Sandoval said the action of immediate or planned termination of employees involved was determined following a review of an investigation looking into the patient transports from Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital.

"Over the weekend, I reviewed the results of the investigation into patients transported out of state," Sandoval said. "All individuals who violated release policies have been or will be disciplined…While the investigation showed the vast majority of patient releases were done correctly, it also revealed policies were not followed by certain individuals."

Sandoval also said the state is listening to national experts in the mental health field for best practices when it comes to policies on releasing patients.

"As I have stated before, improperly discharging one patient is one patient too many," Sandoval continued. "It is important to me and all Nevadans that we treat our most vulnerable members of society with dignity and care."

Last week, an investigation concluded in the dumping of 1,500 patients to points out of state. The investigation revealed the transports of patients have been going on since July 2008.

The State Department of Health and Human Services said two medical staff and the hospital administrator must now review and approve transportation requests. Two staff members from Rawson-Neal were immediately disciplined following an investigation.
