Henderson police investigating car theft ring

HENDERSON, NV (FOX5) -

A Henderson apartment complex is on high alert after being the latest target in a string of car thefts. Residents at the Arabella Apartment Homes near Sunset and Green Valley Parkway were told a resident parked her Honda Accord there after a trip to the grocery store, and a few days later it was stolen.

A notice to residents says Henderson Police found the stolen car at Montego Bay Apartments on Whitney Ranch Road and returned it to its owner. Police told management the incident is likely connected to a car theft ring they're investigating. They also said they found another stolen Honda in the same parking lot, which they also believe to be part of the theft ring.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police say older-model Hondas are some of the most attractive targets for car thieves because the ignitions and door locks are easier to break in to.

Learning that one of her neighbors had a Honda stolen from the apartment parking lot was a familiar feeling for neighbor Kelly Shourds. Her Honda was stolen from a different complex a few years ago. "You never really feel safe afterwards. You're always afraid you're going to go somewhere and someone's going to do it again to you," Shourds said.

Another resident, Ann Flores, isn't taking any chances with her car. She had extra security measures installed after someone broke into it in another state. "If (car thieves) can get through the alarm, Lojack and the Club, God bless them. They're not going to," she said.

Metro Police say Flores has the right idea. The more security you have, the less appealing your car is to thieves. The easiest way to deter theft is to lock your doors and windows.

The department says there have been slightly fewer stolen cars this year compared to this time last year, but the number of car burglaries is up by about 200.
