Wet ‘N' Wild Las Vegas will appear to be the only new water park opening in southern Nevada this year.

An owner of competing attraction Cowabunga Bay in Henderson announced Friday construction has halted, pushing back the park's opening to spring 2014.

The park, like Wet ‘N' Wild, was originally slated to open this Memorial Day.

Owner Shane Huish told FOX5 Friday the delay was made after certain construction elements set the timeline for opening back.

"We apologize for this because we know a lot of people are disappointed. We are disappointed," said Huish.

Huish also noted developers did not want to rush the project in the midst of the setbacks like late delivery of construction materials, such as steel, and the discovery of unexpected caliche.

Huish said it was an extremely tough decision to push the park's debut back, but the way construction was proceeding, the earliest the park could be fully operational in 2013 was mid-August, not enough time in the water park season to turn a profit.

"I'd liken it to opening a Christmas tree lot Dec. 24," said Huish.

Huish, an entrepreneur based in Draper, Utah, partnered with company Vegas Residential, LLC for the project located near Galleria Drive and Gibson Road, just east of the U.S. 95 freeway.

"I've never been on a project where people have so anxiously awaited us. This is a dynamite project, and there's no way we're walking away from it," said Huish.

The opening of Cowabunga Bay this year would have launched a "water race" competition with Wet ‘N' Wild as the Las Vegas Valley prepared to welcome back large-scale water amusements.

The last water attraction in the area, the Wet ‘N' Wild on the Las Vegas Strip, folded in 2004.
