Woman stunned by reversal of officer's conviction

Posted: Updated:

A woman who accused an Air Force lieutenant colonel of sexually assaulting her says she was stunned to learn a commander had reversed the officer's conviction for attacking her.

Kimberly Hanks told NBC News in mid-March that it looked as though the commander who overturned Lt. Col. James Wilkerson's conviction was protecting one of his own.

The Associated Press doesn't routinely identify people who say they were sexually assaulted. But a group representing Hanks says she voluntarily came forward to shed light on what it calls the military's mishandling of sex assault cases.

Supporters plan a protest Thursday in Arizona to denounce a decision to transfer Wilkerson to a base in Tucson, where much of Hanks' family lives.

Wilkerson denies the sex-assault allegations, and the commander says he found Wilkerson believable.
