Royals, Red Sox to play doubleheader Sunday

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The Boston Red Sox have officially announced Friday night's game against the Royals has been postponed and, to make up for Friday, the teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday.

A tweet from their account was made about 2 p.m.:

"OFFICIAL: Tonight's Red Sox game at Fenway Park scheduled for 7:10pm has been postponed to support efforts of law enforcement officers."

The Kansas City Royals are in lockdown in their hotel overlooking the site of the Boston Marathon bombings.

The Royals, like most of Boston, have been told to stay put. The situation has especially come home to the team because some of the hotel room overlooks Boylston Street where the finish line was.

"We've just been told to stay put," said Mike Swanson, vice president of communications for the team, who can see the debris from his room. "We are following orders. Everybody is just biding their time."

In light of the horror in Boston, Swanson said the team is keeping perspective and knows there are a lot more things going on in Boston than a baseball game, even if it's the city's beloved Red Sox.

"Let's get this situation handled first, and then we will worry if the game goes on or not," he said.

The Royals' thoughts are with everyone impacted by the tragedy.

The first pitch for Saturday's game was at 12:10 p.m.

The first game on Sunday starts at 12:35 p.m. and the second one is set for 6 p.m.
