LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A deadly wreck forced a closure at an intersection in the southeast Las Vegas valley Friday.

Las Vegas Metro police reported the wreck just after 8 a.m. on Russell Road, west of Pecos Road.

According to police, a patrol officer witnessed a 2002 Nissan Maxima committing multiple traffic violations. The officer attempted to catch up to the Nissan to make a traffic stop but it turned onto Russell Road and crossed the center line into oncoming traffic.

The Nissan then entered the intersection with Pecos Road against a red light, striking a 2008 Cadillac.

The Nissan went off the roadway and struck a utility pole. The driver of the Nissan was taken to Sunrise Trauma Center where he or she was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the Cadillac suffered minor injuries.

This marks the 39th fatal traffic-related fatality in Metro's jurisdiction in 2013. The wreck remains under investigation.
