Allergies hitting hard in the valley

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

It's allergy season and our recent high winds are stirring up the pollen and making it even worse. Sniffling, sneezing, coughing are just some of the symptoms many people are suffering from, but there are some things you can do to suffer a little less.

Dr. Joel Katz with the Allergy and Asthma Center of Las Vegas said if you have severe symptoms or recurring symptoms such as seasonal or pet allergies, an allergy test may be perfect for you. That way you can pinpoint exactly what you're allergic to and getting treated specifically for your allergies. One way they go about this is with a course of allergy shots to desensitize the allergy sufferer.

Katz said that some patients wait so long that they end up in the hospital suffering from asthma. He said when symptoms become too much to deal with you should see a professional.

"You may need a nasal steroid," said Katz. "If you're short of breath you may have allergic asthma. You may need inhalers or oral steroids to take care of that."

Some other the other tips from the doctor include exercising early in the morning or late at night, washing your hair before bedtime and using your air conditioning in the car instead of rolling down the windows.
