Healing Newtown looking for a new location

NEWTOWN, CT (WFSB) -

An organization that has been helping Newtown children and families heal in the wake of the Sandy Hook tragedy may be forced out of their current location.

Organizers of Healing Newtown told Eyewitness News they've just learned from a realtor that their space will be rented and said it could be as little as two weeks before they'd have to move out.

Healing Newtown has an art gallery, which features artwork from all over the world, located in a busy shopping plaza in the center of Newtown.

After Dec. 14 where 20 children and six adults were shot and killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School, dozens of people have visited the art gallery each day.

"It's a safe place, a warm place, a happy place with the different events here and the artwork here," said Jennifer Johnston, who is the chairperson at the Newtown Cultural Arts Commission. "It is all focused on uplifting the community."

The space was donated to the Newtown Cultural Arts Commission on a temporary basis after the tragedy, but now someone wants to rent the space.

Now, Healing Newtown is searching for a new space.

"We'll take anything at this point, even if we only have one wall to put artwork on," Johnston said. "It's OK. We'll rotate. We'll work with that."

Johnston told Eyewitness News that members of the Newtown Cultural Arts Commission and she are considering their options.

"We love this location," she said. "We love this space, however we realize we can't stay here forever."

Johnston added that the commission must come up with funds quickly in order to pay the rent at a new location. Healing Newtown is relying on the generosity of the community.

Members of the Newtown Cultural Arts Commission said they are hoping to make the gallery a permanent part of Newtown, so they can help with the healing process.
