Las Vegans flock to Primm as Powerball ticket sales start in CA

PRIMM, NV (FOX5) -

Powerball tickets just got a whole lot closer to Las Vegas. Starting Monday, California is the newest addition to the multi-state mega-jackpot lottery game.

On the first day of sales in the Golden State, many in Las Vegas are heading for the small Primm Lotto Store just over the California-Nevada boarder.

"Very excited, I was waiting, I have it on my phone saved for today to come down," said one Powerball ticket buyer from southern Nevada.

California's entry into the multi-state lottery game will save many in southern Nevada time and gas rather than taking the trip into Arizona.

The Arizona Last Stop on U.S. 93 in White Hills, AZ, is the closet store which sells lottery tickets in the Grand Canyon State.

"Hell, that's 110 miles round trip," one man who drove to California Monday said about the drive into Arizona.

"I used to drive all the way to Laughlin, cross the bridge buy the Powerball and come back ... [this is going to be] much easier," a woman who drove to California Monday told FOX5.

Because Powerball tickets cost $2, the mega-jackpot often starts higher than Mega Millions, which is just a dollar per ticket and has always been sold in both Arizona and California.

Those high jackpots are why some players told FOX5 Powerball is better.

"I think it's because it's lots of people playing it and it's more money, like right now it's $60 million," one woman buying tickets in California told FOX5.

While lines were not too long on Monday, with the jackpot at $60 million, those who work at the Primm Lotto Store told FOX5 once the jackpot gets up to $70 million, there's going to be lines out the door.

Meanwhile, many who made the drive into California are still questioning why Nevada can't follow the Golden State's lead and get any kind of state lottery games.

"Maybe the people want it enough, it's going to move over. Let's hope," a woman from Las Vegas told FOX5 inside the Primm Lotto Store.
