A 30-year-old man has been killed in a construction accident at the Bagdad Mine, according to authorities.
The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office said Alvin Thomas of Many Farms, AZ, was part of a crew fitting a row of large pipes together about 2 p.m. Thursday when one of the pipes came loose and hit Thomas in the back of the head.
The pipe was 40 feet long, 3 feet around and weighed more than 5,000 pounds.
Thomas was pronounced dead soon after.
The medical examiner is investigating the cause of death.
Thomas was a contract worker with the Freeport-McMoran Copper and Gold Mine in Bagdad.
The Arizona State Mine Inspector's Office is investigating.
