Police said a school bus struck and killed a person in a wheelchair in the southeast end of the Las Vegas valley on Thursday.
According to Las Vegas Metro police, officers received a call of the incident just before noon in the area of Maryland Parkway and Reno Avenue.
Police said the bus was traveling westbound on Reno Avenue and stopped for a stop sign on Maryland Parkway. The victim, an 81-year-old man, was riding a motorized wheelchair northbound on the west sidewalk of Maryland Parkway, entered the marked crosswalk south of Reno Avenue and began crossing eastbound.
As the school bus turned southbound onto Maryland Parkway, it struck the victim. The victim was taken to Sunrise Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
A spokesperson with Clark County School District said there were no children on board the bus at the time.
Police said the accident is under investigation. This marks the 36th traffic-related fatality within Metro's jurisdiction so far in 2013.
