BARSTOW, CA (FOX5) -

Ousted Nevada lawmaker Steven Brooks pleaded not guilty Tuesday when he appeared before a judge via video feed in California Tuesday after his arrest for leading police on a high-speed pursuit.

Brooks faces charges of felony evading, willful harm to a police service dog, resisting a peace officer with force and throwing objects from a vehicle.

During his arraignment in Barstow Superior Court, Brooks had a bail reduction denied despite his expressed desire to seek mental help.

Brooks was appointed a public defender and had his next court appearance scheduled for April 9.

According to the San Bernardino County, Calif. District Attorney, Brooks could face up to five years and four months if convicted on the charges.

Police in Barstow, Calif. said Brooks was arrested on March 28 after he tried out-driving officers on Interstate 15 outside of the southern California town.

Police said Brooks threw objects out of his car during the pursuit before his vehicle was disabled by road spikes. Brooks would be taken into custody but not before police used a K9 officer and a stun gun to subdue the former lawmaker, according to police.

The incident happened just hours after his former colleagues voted to expel him from the Nevada Assembly. His job was on the line after two previous arrests – one involving threats toward the Assembly Speaker and another involving a domestic dispute with his wife. In the latter arrest, Brooks was also charged with resisting officers.

Brooks remains in custody at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. on $100,000 bail.
