LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
A fourth person has been arrested in connection with an alleged two-part plot to kill a family member.
Courtney Smith, 20, was arrested by Metro police on Thursday, charged with conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder.
It's alleged that on June 17, 2012, Smith attempted to poison Robert Bessey, the adopted father of her ex-boyfriend, Michael Bessey. Smith's arrest reports state she was to be paid $50,000 by Robert Bessey's wife, Amy Pearson, also known as Amy Bessey, to kill Robert Bessey.
Smith allegedly gave Robert Bessey a Red Bull energy drink spiked with arsenic, which he immediately spat out.
The report further states Pearson and Robert Bessey were going through a divorce at the time and there was speculation Robert Bessey abused Pearson.
The alleged attempted poisoning is the first of two alleged attempts on Robert Bessey's life.
Pearson surrendered to police on Jan. 4 on charges connected to a drive-by shooting incident that injured Robert Bessey last November.
According to police, investigators learned, through a series of interviews with family friends and relatives, that the Nov. 14 alleged hit on Robert Bessey may have been planned in order to benefit from a payout of his nearly $400,000 life insurance policy and Social Security benefits.
Michael Bessey and his uncle, Richard Pearson, were arrested in connection to Robert Bessey's attempted slaying by drive-by.
Police accuse Amy Pearson of directing Michael Bessey and Richard Pearson to drive next to Robert Bessey's vehicle and shoot him while on Interstate 15. Robert Bessey survived the shooting after being struck in the base of his neck, police said.
Amy Pearson faces charges including attempted murder with a deadly weapon, battery with substantial bodily harm and conspiracy to commit murder.
