Hearing to decide fate of Nevada assemblyman

Posted: Updated:

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - A special legislative committee is ready to consider whether an embattled colleague is fit to serve in the Nevada Legislature.

The seven-member Assembly Select Committee meets Tuesday night at the Carson City courthouse to hear evidence and weigh whether Assemblyman Steven Brooks should be expelled or allowed to resume serving his district.

The recommendation will then go to the full Assembly. Expulsion requires a two-thirds vote, or 28 of 42 members. No Nevada legislator has ever been expelled.

Brooks was elected to a second term in November. Since January, he has been arrested twice, hospitalized for a mental evaluation, and banned from the legislative building because of public incidents and bizarre behavior.

If he is expelled, the Clark County Commission would appoint a replacement.
