Prescribed burns to reduce fire risk at Lake Mead

Posted: Updated:
LAKE MEAD (FOX5) -

Prescribed burns were ordered near Lake Mead within the next two weeks, according to the National Park Service.

The Lake Mead National Recreation Area Fire Management Team plans to restore the landscape and reduce wildfire hazards in the burns.

According to NPS, one burn will focus on a five-acre area east of Cottonwood Cove in Arizona, while another will be in a two-acre area near Las Vegas Bay.

Officials said the burn schedule will depend on weather conditions, but they will aim for burns during the work week when visitation is at lower levels.

There will be no closure required, but visitors are being asked to remain 200 feet away from the burn areas.
