Funeral held for teen killed in hit-and-run

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Jem Agustin was one of hundreds of people who came to pay respects to 17-year-old Alexis Monasterio.

Agustin said the two were best friends who shared thousands of memories.

"I remember this one time in middle school, this one girl said, ‘Oh, I'm craving pancakes,' and the next day Alexis just comes in with pancakes, just to be nice," Agustin said.

During Monasterio's memorial service, hundreds came to share similar stories of the Disney and Star Wars fan they knew as Lexi.

"Then I remember prom, I asked her in the corniest way. (I) was wearing a Darth Vader mask and I had a lightsaber," a friend recalled during the service.

Alexis was a senior at East Career and Technical Academy, studying in the culinary program with dreams of one day becoming a chef.

Speaking at the funeral, her father, David Monasterio, told the crowd Alexis' humor is something he'll miss most.

"She pulled the classic gag of putting plastic wrap over the toilet seat," David Monasterio told a story of one April Fools' Day.

Police said Alexis was struck and killed near Charleston and Hollywood Saturday night.

But detectives still have not released any suspect information and have no new updates as of Thursday.

"To be honest, I thought I was going to speak at her wedding not her funeral," Agustin said.

While Agustin and everyone else who was at the funeral wants whoever was responsible brought to justice, for now they're trying to live by the example left by Alexis's smile in so many photographs.

"Alexis wouldn't want me to be too sad about it. It was her time," Agustin said.
