Nightclub and bar convention sets bar for technology

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Nearly 40,000 bar and nightclub professionals from all over the county are gathered in Las Vegas.

Those convention attendees look to our city for inspiration. Some of our bars and clubs take in more than $90 million a year.

The Nightclub & Bar Convention, being held at the Las Vegas Convention Center, is now in its 28th year. It's always been held in our city.

"Everything has to be new, bigger, better, trendier, hipper, and that puts a lot of pressure on nightclubs, said Jon Taffer, president of the Nightclub & Bar Media Group.

Taffer, a Las Vegas resident, knows what he's talking about. He specializes in revamping struggling bars all over the country for his reality show, "Bar Rescue."

Taffer said that on average it costs between $150,000 and $400,000 to completely redo a bar or club.

Many convention attendees are willing to open their wallets in order to upgrade their business and stay ahead of the competition.

"We have furniture here, technology, décor, carpets, wallpaper – you can pretty much design your whole new bar while you're here," Taffer said.

There is no shortage of new and exciting items for attendees to spend their money on while making the rounds to approximately 90 vendors. Many are looking to get a jump on the latest technology.

"They can order through their mobile application and we can do payment through their phone as well. It's kind of the next thing that's here," said James Bacarella, owner of Hospitality Technology Systems.

Convention attendees will likely spend plenty of money outside of the trade show, bringing an estimated $43 million boost to the Las Vegas economy.

"Our 38,000 attendees are here to drink, they're here to eat, and they're here to gamble. So our group really brings a lot of money into the city," Taffer said

The convention runs on Thursday from noon until 5 p.m.
