LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A family is searching for answers after a 17-year-old girl's body was found lying on the road over the weekend. Police are calling it a hit-and-run.

Alexis Monasterio was a senior at East Career and Technical Academy. On Monday many of her classmates didn't want to go to school, feeling grief-stricken by the sudden loss.

Those who knew Monasterio say her future was as bright as the flowers and candles that sit at her memorial. Her parents' hearts are shattered.

"My daughter is so beautiful inside and out," said Claudia Monasterio, Alexis Monasterio's mother. "All she wanted was to make people happy. Why would someone do this to her?"

"She didn't deserve this," said David Monasterio, Alexis Monasterio's father. "She was my little bear and she called me papa bear."

At about midnight on Sunday, a passer-by reported Alexis Monasterio's body lying on Charleston Boulevard in front of the Palo Verde housing complex. Police are investigating it as a hit-and-run but have released few details to the family and media.

"I was in shock," said Adrienne Ribitch, a classmate of the victim. "She is such an amazing person. She is just so sweet. She is the last person I would expect this to happen to."

Ribitch said Alexis Monasterio was studying to be a chef and was set to graduate in June.

"It's really depressing," Ribitch said. "There's girls and guys walking around crying, teachers are crying and hugging each other."

"I feel like it's unfair," said classmate Marie Ruiz. "I told my parents that most people don't understand how serious this really is."

Alexis Monasterio's parents believe foul play was involved.

"It was not an accident," said Claudia Monasterio. "Somebody killed my daughter. I want justice for that."

Police have not released any details concerning a suspect or car. Meanwhile, grief counselors were at Alexis Monasterio's school on Monday. The school district said they will be there as long as they are needed.

Alexis Monasterio's classmates are having a bake sale this Saturday to help the family pay for funeral expenses. It will be at the Albertsons grocery store on Nellis Boulevard at Vegas Valley Drive from noon to 4 p.m.

Alexis Monasterio's funeral is set for Thursday at Champion Center of Las Vegas, 3900 E. Bonanza Rd. Visitation is from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. The service will begin at 4 p.m.
