PINAL COUNTY, AZ (CBS5) -

Deputies squashed a California man's plans to hide 1,243 pounds of marijuana in a semi truck carrying produce.

The Pinal County Sheriff's Office said a K-9 deputy on patrol along I-10 at milepost 206 saw a semi truck driving erratically on Wednesday.

PCSO said during the traffic stop, the deputy could smell marijuana.

The driver, Norberto De La Vega, 59, told the deputy he was returning to Los Angeles.

The drug dog and deputy found the pot hidden in 32 large cardboard vegetable bins full of squash.

The marijuana was valued at nearly $925,000, according to PCSO.

De La Vega was arrested and faces several drug charges.

PCSO donated the squash to St. Mary's Food Bank.
