Nevada Assemblyman Steven Brooks left a bizarre voicemail to Veterans in Politics President Steve Sanson, requesting a bulletproof vest.

"I need a vest pretty bad too. Transfer the money and we'll talk about that," Brooks said in the voicemail to Sanson.

Sanson said the embattled politician is an old friend, and after Brooks' arrest in January, he was trying to help him.

"Kind of clean up his negative publicity," Sanson said.

But Sanson said Brooks was more interested in getting the vest as well as night vision goggles.

"He started asking me about infrareds," Sanson said.

Sanson agreed to get Brooks the vest, but thought giving him the night vision wouldn't be a good idea.

"Infrareds are more used for offense than defense … according to him, he had more weapons than he needed," Sanson said.

In exchange, Sanson wanted Brooks to come on his AM Talk Radio show as a guest.

But Sanson said Brooks never showed.

"I did not commit to this Saturday, you're going to embarrass yourself, unless, unless we can make a little deal," Brooks said on Sanson's voicemail.

That deal was to send the bulletproof vest back to Carson City with Brooks' assistant.

"He did receive the vest, but he backed out of the radio show," Sanson said.

On Wednesday, legislature police subpoenaed Sanson's phone, and they now have the voicemails and several hundred texts messages between the two.

What Brooks wanted the vest and night vision for, Sanson said he didn't know.

"I just hope that Steven Brooks will do the right thing," Sanson said.
