PHOENIX (CBS5) -
A motorist has been booked on two counts of aggravated assault in connection with a crash that injured and shut down a part of I-17 early Monday morning.
Johnny Bonnie, 41, of Phoenix, also faces a charge of criminal damage.
Bonnie was traveling in a Jeep northbound in the southbound lanes of Interstate 17 at about 3:26 a.m. when he slammed head-on into a southbound vehicle, Arizona Department of Public Safety officers said. Both vehicles were in the HOV lane.
Bonnie had minor injuries, but the occupants of the other vehicle were rushed to John C. Lincoln Hospital. The woman suffered a severe head injury. Her 13-year-old daughter was also hurt.
The victims had be extricated from their vehicles.
DPS officers said they strongly suspect Bonnie was impaired at the time of the crash.
The accident initially closed all but the outside lane of I-17 near Dixileta Drive, but all lanes reopened to southbound traffic at about 8:30 a.m.
No other information was immediately available.
