LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
The wet conditions at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway Friday left fans trying to make the best of the day.
"Cold and wet. Very cold, very wet," described Christopher Pitchios of Las Vegas.
Gray skies and gusty winds lingered over the Speedway for most of the day. And when the rain started falling, some fans came prepared, while others ran for cover.
"We put the canopies up and it is what it is," said Richie Gainer of Salt Lake City, who has a recreational vehicle parked on the track's infield.
The roar of low-speed jet dryers took the place of souped-up engines.
On the infield, kids took up a different set of wheels, in the form of bicycles. Others passed the time playing catch, texting, eating, drinking, starting fires, watching TV, or enjoying a friendly game of corn hole. You name it - someone's ready.
"It's raining. So you might as well have a little fun," said one RV camper.
"We've been killing time," said Pitchios. "We're playing Star Wars trivia and well, drinking a little bit."
That was a common theme Friday, which typically carries through the entire weekend. A little liquid courage goes far at the track.
Still, the inclement weather took many by surprise.
"We were like, seriously? In Vegas?" said a fan from San Francisco.
The fans just hope that Mother Nature is cooking up a better Saturday and Sunday.
"Rain's gone. It's gonna be beautiful tomorrow!" one fan proclaimed.
