A man trying to harm himself at his North Las Vegas home was shot by police after he opened fire at them, authorities said.

According to North Las Vegas police, officers responded to a call of a man threatening himself with various weapons at a home in the 5400 block of Winterdale Street, near Valley Drive and Hammer Lane, just before 7:15 p.m. Sunday.

When officers arrived, police said, the 52-year-old suspect opened fire. Two of the officers then returned fire, hitting the suspect multiple times, according to NLVPD.

The suspect surrendered to police and was transported to University Medical Center-Trauma, where he was listed in serious condition, police said.

There were no other injuries reported.

The two officers identified as 5-year and 6-year veterans of NLVPD were placed on paid administrative leave.
