LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Hundreds of union cab drivers from Yellow Checker Star Transportation marched in the streets while holding signs and tirelessly chanting, "Shame on you, YCS."

When the company and the drivers' union failed to reach a contract agreement, the drivers turned their keys in and went on strike.

The drivers walked off the job at midnight Sunday and vow to keep protesting until an agreement is reached.

Drivers like Dustin Qualls say they haven't received a raise in five years. Small paychecks, long work weeks and a general lack of respect are some of the other reasons for striking. "A mandatory 60-hour work week is a long week. Any other job in America, that's a week and half with no overtime," Qualls explained.

Qualls has been saving money since January anticipating striking while trying to support his family. "Drivers are finally fed up. We finally stuck together, and that's what we needed," he said.

According to employees, there are between 1,700 and 1,800 drivers employed at Yellow Checker Star. They say about 1,300 of them are members of the union, most of whom are participating in the strike. Some drivers did choose to opt out and continue working, much to the disappointment of their coworkers, who booed at them when they approached the cab yard. The Taxicab Authority Board also approved 30 additional medallions per company back in November to lessen the effects of a strike.

Union leaders say Yellow Checker Star hasn't made a statement to them indicating any progress toward reaching an agreement.

Yellow Checker Star did not answer FOX5's request for a statement.
