Flagstaff pays respects to fallen Marine from Navajo Nation

FLAGSTAFF, AZ (CBS5) -

Flagstaff residents paid their respects to a U.S. Marine from the Navajo Nation who died in combat in Afghanistan.

The body of Staff Sgt. Jonathan D. Davis, 34, passed through Flagstaff the way to Kayentaon Friday morning and was escorted by emergency vehicles and military veterans on motorcycles.

Davis, of Kayenta, was assigned to Headquarters Battalion, 32nd Georgian Liaison Team, Regimental Combat Team 7, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, CA, according to the Department of Defense.

Davis was killed in Helmand province. He was a Purple Heart recipient who joined the Marine Corps in 1997 and saw combat in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Gov. Jan Brewer ordered all state flags to fly at half-staff last Tuesday and on the day of his interment.
