RENO, Nev. (AP) -- Law enforcement authorities shadowing troubled Nevada Assemblyman Steven Brooks say he tried to purchase a gun at a northern Nevada sporting goods store.
Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong says Brooks was unsuccessful in obtaining a rifle Thursday at Scheels in Sparks, but it's unclear whether he was denied the purchase or is awaiting a routine 72-hour waiting period for gun purchases.
Scheels store manager Todd Anderson didn't immediately return a phone call for comment.
Last month, Brooks was arrested for allegedly threatening Assembly Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick. He was accused of grabbing for an officer's gun during an arrest nearly two weeks ago on suspicion of domestic battery in Las Vegas.
Police say Brooks had a gun and dozens of rounds of ammunition in his car after the first arrest.
