LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

The City of Las Vegas will move forward with replacing outdated parking meters in downtown and increasing free parking in the area.

The city council approved Wednesday the move to replace the old meters with new multi-bay meters that accepts credit and debit cards, as well as coins.

The plans also include the permanent removal of about 125 metered-spaces, which will open up free parking opportunities, the city said.

The installations will be done by parking management company Parkeon. The city said about 233 new meters will be installed in the summer and they will take the place of 1,216 existing meters.

The meters are also solar-powered and will allow motorists to access mobile apps that will signal locations of open spaces.

The city said funding for the project, which is estimated at $1.45 million, is from the city's Parking Enterprise Fund, which is separate from the general fund.
