LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A fugitive who died after exchanging gunfire with an FBI agent on Tuesday in east Las Vegas was wanted for a number of crimes, including an assault on his ex-girlfriend.

The bureau's Las Vegas Field Office said a Criminal Apprehension Team was serving an arrest warrant for Javier Solomon Reyes, 32. Reyes had been pursued by the multi-jurisdictional team Tuesday afternoon near Charleston Boulevard and Christy Lane.

The FBI said one of its agents was shot during a foot pursuit with Reyes but was protected by a protective vest. The agent was treated at University Medical Center and later released, a hospital official confirmed.

The suspect in the chase was also hospitalized but died from gunshot wounds he sustained in the chase, the FBI said.

Reyes was the same person Las Vegas Metro police suspected of threatening a woman on Dec. 29. According to Metro, the woman who was identified as Reyes' ex-girlfriend had a gun to her face at a home in the 6300 block of E. Sahara Avenue.

Police also said Reyes was suspected of breaking into an elderly couple's home on Feb. 7. In that incident, police said officers spotted Reyes. He then fled to the home, took the couple's car keys and took off in a Hyundai model vehicle.

Meanwhile, neighbors in the area were shaken by the eruption of gunfire during the chase. One neighbor witnessed the suspect run into her yard before climbing onto a roof. It was there that witnesses said he was shot.

"I was terrified," a neighbor who wished to remain anonymous said.

At 2:50 p.m., the anonymous neighbor was working inside her home when she heard banging.

"I saw an FBI agent right here and around the corner. He had his gun drawn," she said.

The agent instructed her to get down as the suspect ran into her backyard.

"I got down and gunshots started going off. And I just stayed down until I didn't hear them any more," she said.

"I realized it was directly behind us. I called my friend who lives behind us. She said the police shot someone on the roof of a house," neighbor Darlene Ulibarri said.

"I was terrified. My back door was unlocked to my sliding glass door. All I was thinking was he was going to come inside and try to hide from police or try to take me, shoot me or something," the anonymous neighbor said. "It's just really scary."

The Criminal Apprehension Team is made up of federal agents along with officers from Las Vegas Metro and the Henderson Police Department.
