Authorities in Nye County charged a man in connection to a slaying that stemmed from an ongoing dispute with teen boys.
According to the county's sheriff's office, Avery Church, 58, of Armargosa Valley, was arrested Sunday in connection to the shooting death of John Sprague.
Detectives learned Church had been in a dispute on Feb. 15 with four teen boys and another adult while at a family member's house. Deputies said Church pulled a gun during the dispute but left without it escalating.
The sheriff's office also learned Church went to confront the boys on Sunday when they were gathering fire wood. According to authorities, Church pointed the gun at the boys, turned around and shot twice at a stump.
Deputies said the boys reported what had happened to an adult and Sprague.
Sprague later went to Church's home to confront him but was shot in the abdomen. He later died while in transport to the hospital.
According to deputies, Church said he was struck twice by Sprague and felt he needed to defend himself.
Church was booked without bail at the Nye County Sheriff's Office. He faces a murder charge and a total of nine counts of assault with a deadly weapon.
Armargosa Valley is located about 90 miles northwest of the Las Vegas Valley.
