It's rare to see professional soccer in Las Vegas. On Friday, two of Major League Soccer's (MLS) finest franchises squared off right here in town.
The Colorado Rapids and the Chivas USA played an exhibition match at Sam Boyd Stadium. The match was the first of the Las Vegas Pro Soccer Challenge.
The tournament will be held annually and is designed to grow the sport locally and promote soccer tourism to the valley.
"You certainly have the fans here, the wherewithal to support a team," said Dan Lyle with the Las Vegas Pro Soccer Challenge.
The teams on Friday night battled on the same grass that was used by the USA Sevens rugby teams last week, and it was Lyle who thought to add the soccer showdown.
"We looked at it as trying to fill an international month," he said.
"These are untapped markets for us, and MLS," said Paul Bravo with the Colorado Rapids.
Regardless of how the teams got here, thousands of fans showed up, many looking to the pros for guidance.
The event is slated to return, and with more teams in the coming years.
The Chivas took Friday night's match, 3-0.
